This exhibition shows what artists can do with a bit of hessian, a simple hook and some rags. In recent years rag rugs have departed from the wholly utilitarian aspect to an art form in their own right.

Louisa Creed, who has been painting in rags for the last 15 years, has a painterly approach to this media. Her work has been described as organic because she uses the constraint inherent in the hooking technique to give form and movement to her landscapes and character to her cats.

Glenda Morris attempts to overcome the constraint by making her rugs unruly with as bold a use of textures and colour as the technique will allow. Her designs develop as the rug develops and have been compared to impasto or colour field paintings. | Uffington White Hourse Glenda Morris 2002 |

Lewis Creed, who has produced 50 rugs in the last five years, treats his rugs as carefully crafted mosaics, designed with the whimsy of a cartoonist, bringing a smile to the viewers lips.
